Our African Visionary

Khadija Rama

“I started a dream for people and life, and now the realisation of that dream is being accomplished by so many others reaching out in their communities to realise the dream of restoring human dignity.”

At 24, Khadija Omar Rama led an immediate and very personal response to care for people living with HIV/AIDS – those abandoned by their families and ostracised by the community. Her efforts have been acclaimed both nationally and internationally by CNN Anchor Christiane Amanpour and the Kenyan Government.

  • Woman of the Year award from United Nations Kenya in 2005
  • Kenyan Head of State’s Commendation and Title of Honour in 2006 for her outstanding contribution to peace and reconciliation
  • Nominated as one of six women in Kenya for the Humanitarian Award in 2011 for her long-standing efforts in fighting against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Isiolo

Radical roots

Our Beginning

In 1994, Isiolo was a struggling transit town, torn by tribal clashes and the rising HIV crisis. Amid fear and stigma, a small group of women came together to bring hope to those abandoned by society. Among them was our founder, Khadija Rama.

They began by caring for people in the final stages of AIDS, helping them find peace and dignity in their last days. As numbers grew, Khadija led courageous marches through town (wheelbarrows carrying the sick), demanding soap, blankets, and action from local authorities.

In 1996, the community built its first mud hut clinic, a humble refuge for those in need of care. Two years later, after a visit to Pepo la Tumaini Jangwani, the government declared AIDS a national disaster and the project was formally registered as a community-based organisation.

Since then, alongside new buildings, a thriving community has emerged - built by those that live here and united by resilience, hope, and determination to meet the many social and economic problems challenges of the HIV pandemic.
